Even as we are giving up hope of their daddy reappearing after 2 or 3 weeks, these cuties were added to the farm.
Cats were heard mating when the first of the twin lambs were born, approximately 9 weeks ago. I couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from, since all of our male cats were visible inside the barn.
Surprise surprise, it was two of our "male" adopted kittens from last spring. Efforts to get them neutered had fallen by the wayside, when the appointments were assigned to us during Christmas week.
We were still under the assumption that they were both males, until that one night in the barn, watching the sheep in labor, and the unmistakable act of making kittens confirmed that the smaller, prettier of the males was, in fact, NOT....a male.
Petite mama cat had 4 kittens sometime on Monday. We searched in vain for them last night, and this morning....there they were, snuggled in the straw bedding that is in the silo.
Since we were making it a point to only bring male kitties to the farm, this oversight on our part is especially exciting and fun....because we would not have chosen to bring a little female kitty here to have kittens. I always expected that a stray female would choose our farm to have her kittens one day, but....the "male" kitty from last spring is the mother cat instead! She's friendly, which gives us a much better chance of playing with kittens in the next few months. :)
Mama kitty dashed to them when she first heard them squeak, and curled up protectively around them when I took photos. I hope she doesn't move them before Jeremy gets home this afternoon.
This will be fun! :)
